Ferenc Callmeyer passed away
Ferenc Callmeyer, Prima as well as Ybl Award winning architect, founding member of the Association of Hungarian Architects, the first president of the Hungarian Chamber of Architects, a corresponding member of HAA and the creator of major Hungarian buildings, died on 3 October 2020 at the age of 92. "A bad building is easy to describe and articulate. A good building is very difficult. I stand there, I love it - and I won't be able to tell you why," professed Ferenc Callmeyer. HAA and the Hungarian Chamber of Architects regard the passing of Ferenc Callmeyer as losing one of their own.
Ferenc Callmeyer was born in Miskolc on 3 April 1928. His family name preserves his ancestral Danish origin. He graduated from the Technical University with a degree in architecture, taught there for several decades, he was the architect of MEZŐTERV and then until 1963 he was the architect of IPARTERV. He received the Ybl Award at a young age.
The 1956 revolution became a defining experience for him: he survived the Kossuth Square volley on the spot. After the political change in 1989 he himself erected a monument to the gunfire on the spot. He created emblematic buildings in the framework of the development of Lake Balaton. He also worked in England. After his return he designed the Kossuth Square office building, the Újpalota housing estate and several school buildings. He has published several books. He planned about 40 schools. The most beloved of them is the International American School, which stands on Diana Road.
The farewell of Ferenc Callmeyer is to take place on Friday, 16 October 2020 at 12:30 in the cemetery of Telki village. For the spiritual salvation of our beloved dead, we are going to pray on Sunday, 18 October 2020, at 9:15 in the church of King St. Stephen in the village of Telki.
